Research Software Engineer for NYU’s Data Science and Software Services (DS3)
We are seeking Research Software Engineers (RSE) to join research teams in the university to:
advise and enhance research teams, focusing on software-related concerns design, develop, refactor, package, harden, and/or deploy software products operationalize and/or productize new tools, methods, or services
In particular we are looking for RSEs with development skills in one or more of the following areas:
Web applications Cloud-native application Systems engineering Database management DevOps
We are also looking for RSEs with experience in data analytics, particularly using distributed systems like hadoop and spark, high-performance computing, and/or cloud computing technology (e.g. GCP).
New York University has recently launched Data Science and Software Services (DS3), which aims to enhance the University’s research efforts by growing capacity in areas that are critical to data-driven research, ranging from software development to rigorous methodology. Data Science and Software Services is an initiative of the Moore-Sloan Data Science Environment, which is being executed in partnership with the Center for Data Science, NYU PRIISM, NYU Libraries, and NYU IT’s Research Technology group.
The Moore-Sloan Data Science environment at NYU was created to enhance data-driven discovery by supporting cross-disciplinary academic data scientists at research institutions. The creation of Data Science and Software Services is a recognition that new roles are needed in the University to create supportive environments for researchers using and developing data-intensive practices.
We are targeting multiple hires and multiple levels aiming at building a team with diverse skills and responsibilities. While the majority of the effort will be on projects in partnership with research teams around the university, the role will also allow for 15% of time to be spent on self-directed, blue-sky research projects. In addition, members of the team will have varying levels of managerial responsibilities, including oversight of Junior Data Scientists.

A Master's degree in Computer Science, Data Science, related technical fields, or equivalent programming background. 2-3 years of experience in an academic or research-focused setting Excellent documentation practices for both software projects as well as administrative reporting. Comfortable in working open source, in particular using git and git hosting platforms (e.g. GitHub, GitLab). Ability to handle multiple projects at once. Organized and detail-oriented. Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communications skills. Candidates should exhibit a strong public service orientation.
Applicants should have skills and experience with the relevant tools for the areas they are targeting. Examples are listed below for the research areas.
Web applications development: Web front-end developers (eg. Angular or React, d3) Web back-end developers (eg. ideally flask, django, sqlalchemy, elastic search, …) Familiarity working with and/or writing RESTful APIs Cloud-native application development (eg. Docker, Kubernetes) Database management (Relational Databases, NoSQL Databases) DevOps engineering (eg. Puppet, Chef, Ansible, Nagios, etc.) General software development skills (Git, GitHub, GitLab; Jenkins) Testing (eg. unit testing, selenium) Experience data analytics using HPC, distributed systems (e.g. hadoop, spark) and/or cloud computing (e.g. GCP, Azure, AWS)
